Care For A Toast

Toasts are my addiction. Though I am not on my own, given that 88 percent of homes in America has a toaster with 75 million people using it every day. The English have enjoyed a long history and love affair with toast or Tost as it was called. . The toast in the Middle ages was created by putting bread over an open fire or above a hot stone. The toast did not fragment that is why it was used to absorb liquids such as stew or soup. ‘Sops’, as it was actually called, meaning pieces of toasted bread. And more often than not was topped with such delicious things as honey, cinnamon, ginger, sugar or raisins. It was just about in the 17th century when people got a taste of the first cinnamon toast. Cinnamon paste, sugar and wine were used in making the toast. My husband prefers the same toast, excluding the wine! So far, toasts have been a favorite tradition here in America, since its inception by the English people who brought them. Nearing the end of the 16th century, various toppings on toasted breads emerged. The popular toppings used were eggs, cheese, meat and at times rosewater.

It was 6,000 years ago that Egyptians introduced the first concept of toast. The sun’s heat, as they observed, can bake their bread, yet the parched desert air dehydrated and rendered the toast tasteless. So, toasting the bread was a way to preserve it and this idea was spread by the Romans throughout Europe. Eventually wire frames were used in fireplaces for toasting bread until the creation of electricity in the early 1900′s, launching the first toasters.

Whenever I get hungry, the first thing I want is toast. I don’t know why I love crusty bread and real butter so much. That was a real treat when we were kids. My grandmother churned her own butter, made muscadine jelly, and her own bread. The bread was sliced thick, toasted, slathered with butter and a nice generous helping of jelly. It was definitely a treat.

There are a few brilliant toasters on the market today, others merged with an oven. You can find toasters that will hold up to four slices of bread. I believe our toaster and toaster oven work more often than any other kitchen appliance. One thing we like doing with our toaster oven is putting sliced tomatoes on its baking sheet. We then put a pinch of salt and pepper, leaves of fresh basil, grated parmesan cheese and a drop of olive oil on top. We cook them until the cheese has melted nicely. In some cases, we love putting provolone cheese on bread with tomatoes, salt and pepper on top, bake it until crispy and chomp on it like an open-faced grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. Toast recipes are never-ending, and these advanced kitchen appliances make preparation faster and easier.

There are songs about toast, toast collectibles, a toast bible, and I even read where there is a toaster that will imprint your toast with the daily weather forecast via the internet.

To me, my granny’s toast recipe is still what I’d like – thickly sliced, burnt to a crisp topped with real butter and muscadine jelly. No one can top that.
