Toasters: Use It Like You Hate It, But It Does Its Job

For most people, toasters are as basic as breakfast, as elemental as a wedding present, as common as stoves and as cheap as $20. Yet the humble bread toaster maybe one of the most abused, beguiled or unused kitchen tool depending on where you are coming from.

As wedding presents, I use to think that bread toasters and wedding presents are almost synonymous. They are the most popular presents for newlyweds (at least to those who refuse to examine the wedding registry) that it is not far fetched that one finds several bread toasters in the packages. In these cases, bread toasters are either recycled as presents to another newlywed or relegated into the attic unused and better not remembered until the current bread toaster breaks up. Then the reserve in the attic starts finding its use and popular place in the kitchen.

When it does, it becomes a very useful tool for preparing breakfasts and snacks, popping up hot toasts to warm hungry tummy’s until the springs or the heating coils fail and the humble bread toaster find a highway to the black bag.

Bread toaster varieties can come from the basic to the more sophisticated and yet it is not really a very simple machine so much so that if you have invented the toaster yourself, and if it can be patented, you might not be selling bread toasters for a cheap $20. Agreed? Think about it because here’s how the bread toaster works.

Bread toasters use infrared radiation to heat a single piece of bread. When you set your bread toaster, the coil starts to glow red. As that happens the heat dries up the bread (that is why it feels like rubber to the bite when it turns cold) and chars the surface of the bread. Your basic bread toaster has two mica sheets that are wrapped in nichrome wires to make it glow faster. Nichrome wires have a high electrical resistance compared with coppers so that a short length can easily turn very hot. The nichrome wire in your bread toaster does not oxidize as fast as other wires that make it a tough customer in heating and an ideal component to toasting.

Old bread toasters do not have the pop up mechanism that present toasters have. What you did then was to insert the bread, plug the device and when the bread gets toasted you unplug the device, bang the toaster on an edge and down goes the bread. This is very messy practice and that would have been the demise of the poor toaster except that a pop up, spring acted tray mechanism was added. This simple addition prevented users from burning their fingers as they try to draw out the bread and prevented the scattering of crumbs on the table when you bang the bread toaster.

To make pop ups more convenient, a handle is pressed down and with it the bread. Three things happen next.

The nichrome wires are supplied with power, a timing device starts to tick and when the right time comes, out pops the bread. In some toasters, the power switch and the timer are both part of the handle.

When the power is turned on, volts of electricity run down the wires heating it up. Transistors, capacitors and resistors regulate power to the electromagnet that when a certain heat is reached, it stops automatically and that means breakfast.

I told you bread toasters are more complicated than simply heating your bread. If I thought all that up, I too wouldn’t be selling it for $20.

A toaster oven is mainly for toasting, broiling, and reheating food. The usual latest two-sliced toaster represents anywhere ranging from 600 and 1200 Watts and can toast from 1 to 3 minutes. This model used a bimetallic strip in toasting breads.

Charles Strite was the first who patented the automatic popup toaster. The bread is ejected (or popped out) automatically after toasting. In 1950, this popup toaster was further developed. The newer models had automatic features that do not need any levers to lower or raise a slice of bread.

There are three varieties of toasters: toaster ovens, popup toasters, and conveyor toasters. Toaster ovens are larger than popup toasters and can be likened to an electric oven. In automatic or popup toasters, bread slices are vertically inserted into slots and ejects the bread when done. Conveyor toasters are suitable for extensive use in the catering industries since they are designed to make many slices of bread, producing 350 to 900 slices per hour.

A convection oven neutralizes unevenly cooked food since it uses a fan to send the heat resulting in fast browning and crisping. It works faster in cooking your food especially during breakfast compared to a standard oven. It is usually more expensive and larger than a standard oven but it can cook food very fast at a lower temperature. It is an energy-saving oven, providing 25% shorter time than the usual period using a standard or radiant oven.

Infrared toaster ovens are flexible, efficient and fast. It cooks food via infrared radiation.

Even with the newer invention of microwave nowadays, many still prefer to use toaster ovens in heating their breads because of the delicious crispness produced. It makes every bite of your bread crunchy outside while retaining the softness inside. Microwaves cannot do this.

Toaster Or Toaster Oven, Which One Should You Have?

Over the past couple of hundred years, kitchens have seen some sort of contraption to toast bread. When first invented, a metal frame was placed into the fire to toast the bread that was inside of it. Now 200 years later, toasters have certainly evolved. No more open fire toasting, instead say hello to the toaster and the toaster oven. Which one is best for you?

Choices for toasters and toaster ovens are endless these days. Toasters now give you the option of either two, four, six, and eight slots. No more waiting around for just two to pop up. Eight slices of toast can be cooked all at one time. If that still is not enough, then maybe the toaster oven is something you need.

Toasters are basically used for toasting bread, bagels, and other small food items that can fit inside the small slot. Toaster oven styles on the other hand are a small oven like appliances. Frozen baking goods, pizzas, baked potatoes all can be placed inside the oven to be cooked in half the time of a regular oven. Households usually have one of each appliance. Saves times, and saves money as well.

Depending on what brand you go with, toasters and toaster ovens have many different features. Some brands such as the Kitchen Aid toasters come with settings that allow you to place frozen pastries inside without worrying about burning them. Other settings include a reheat button and a stop button that brings the bread up once it is pushed. Some brands also come with an option for only one slice of toast for those who eat small.

If bagels are your thing, then one with a wider slot will work well in your kitchen. You can even place a complete sandwich inside and heat that up as well. Unfortunately toasters can only do so much since they are only made for toasting breads. The toaster ovens can do what both can and then a lot more. Having both however is a plus and can save you time in the kitchen.

Remember the pop up toasters or the dial controllers? No more, toasters and toaster ovens now come with digital key pads to simply life in the kitchen. You can even get them in extra large for those who have trouble seeing that early in the morning like many do. Toasters are all about convenience and simplicity, and convenient and simple they are.

If you are worried about the look of your new appliance sitting on your counter, there is no need. Both come in all shapes and sizes to fit your kitchen needs and decor. No need to worry about the appliance not fitting in. Everyone who is anyone has these appliances sitting on their kitchen counter. If you would rather not see it, then just put it under the counter until needed.

Toasters of all shapes, sizes and colors can be found at your local department store for less than $30. The toaster oven styles on the other hand are found more in larger department stores, or you can even check out some online appliance stores. Be sure to compare toaster oven prices before buying. Toaster oven styles can range anywhere from $100 to $300 depending on which brand you decide to buy. Either way, both are definitely a necessity we cannot go without.

Either way, they are both here to stay.
